THE OTHER GENDER

“Sex” is the social status usually based on genital appearance while Gender is determined by the conception of tasks, functions and roles attributed to humans in society and in public and private life. Sex usually refers to the biological aspects of maleness or femaleness, whereas gender implies the psychological, behavioural, social, and cultural aspects of masculinity/femininity.

Third gender or third sex is a concept in which individuals are categorized either by themselves or by society, as neither man nor woman. It also describes a social category present in those societies that recognize three or more genders.

Defined as an individual’s enduring romantic, emotional or sexual attraction towards other persons.

A person’s perception of having a particular gender, which may or may not correspond with their birth sex is termed as Gender Identity.

GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

Gender-based violence (GBV) is the act of violating one’s human right by inflicting physical, verbal, mental and psychological trauma. GBV applies to men, women, other genders and children.
